The Boy with Shoes is a coming of age humor about growing up in a Kenyan village in the 80s and 90s. An era where most people did not have shoes, thanks to poverty.
Hillary however happens to come from a family that can afford some, making him the only boy with shoes in the whole school. This puts him at crossroads because he is hated by classmates for being ‘different’ and quarrelled by the mom if he leaves them behind and goes to school barefoot.
The story is therefore his constant struggle to fit into a society that has refused him, a representation of the common antagonism that exists between the rich and poor, but seen through the eyes of a child.
